This video talks about the importance of goal setting for practising Buddhism. David Lin, an experienced dhamma practitioner, highlights (1) the understanding of the requirements for attaining Sukhavati, a Pure Land of Bliss, and other heavenly realms where Bodhisattvas provide dharma teachings and (2) the importance of the progress monitoring related to Buddhist practice.
Setting goals for practising Buddhism helps guide your focus to successfully attain the heavenly realm where Bodhisattvas provide dharma teachings. Sukhavati, commonly described in the schools of Mahayana Buddhism, is designed for all sentient beings to experience different levels of Buddhism practice. Besides Sukhavati, there are other heavenly realms worth to pursue continuous Buddhism practice. For example, Trayastrimsa (Daoli tian) is the second in the six heavens of the Realm of Desire in Buddhist cosmology. Avalokitesvara (Guanyin) provides dharma teachings in Trayastrimsa for sentient beings who want to pursue a higher level of achievement.
Understanding the requirements for attaining heavenly realms helps maximise the opportunity to achieve the goal. The requirements for achieving the goal depend on the levels of Buddhist practice, such as meditation (Ding), vipassana (Nei Guan) and prajna (Bo Ruo). Vipassana is an observation-based, self-exploratory technique that focuses on the deep interconnection between the mind and body. Prajna refers to the ability to understand and realise the concepts of non-self (Wu Wo) and emptiness (Kong). The implementation of progress monitoring related to Buddhist practice is to ensure the achievement of the heavenly realms.
